Leander Cedar Park Pop Warner Association

This evening Coach Garza took the opportunity to go observe our youngsters who participate in the Leander-Cedar Park Pop Warner League. LCP's Pop Warner is one of the largest in the country, and who should be surprised by that..We're in football crazy Texas!
Pictured below are the LCP PeeWee Lions. What strikes us most about Pop Warner is the unbridled enthusiasm shown by kids who hang on every word their coaches tell them. Most of the volunteers are dads, like us. They love their kids and judging from the adoring parents in the stands everyone hopes that their child's dreams come true and that one day they'll strap it on for their high school and who knows....maybe even play in college.

To that point, one of the brightest alumni to come out of the LCP Pop Warner program was quarterback Paul Thompson. He went on to have a great schoolboy career at Leander HS, and then to play for Bob Stoops' Oklahoma Sooners.

Coach Garza took the opportunity to view the LCP PeeWee Lions as they practiced tonight at Bledsoe Park. Coach Garza instantly understood why the Lions who are currently 5-0 get the job done. There was the sound of hat on hat as several players really laid the wood to each other. Particularly impressive was the organization and cohesiveness shown by the coaching staff. These guys really knew how to instruct and handle the kids with discipline, love and respect.

The staff were too numerous to list, but Head Coach Ron Piper and his two Coordinator's, Defensive Coordinator Billy Ray and Offensive Coordinator Rick Tanton were quick to point out how important every position coach was to their team's success.

Offensively, the Lions run a Wing T, which is the staple of many youth offenses mainly because it's all based on misdirection. One of the toughest things to do is teach kids to "stay at home". Defensively, they set up in a 5-3.

So, our hats are off to these adults and kids, our real "home town heroes" as they go through their season. It takes a lot of timing, hard work and luck to make it to Nationals but the Staff and their players feel they have an excellent chance of reaching that goal.
